Diagnosing the electronic and hydraulic technology used on today’s variable cam and valve timing systems can be difficult. Complex timing and valve train systems are common in all manufacturers. Engines and vehicles with VVT problems are filling independent and fleet service bays every day.

Symptoms of VVT faults include a rough or unstable idle, abnormal engine noises, stalling, lack of power, and/or reduced fuel economy. These symptoms will typically be accompanied by an illuminated check engine light and stored DTCs in the ECU memory.

Variable Valve Timing (VVT) has been incorporated into many late-model import and domestic engines, including single overhead cam (SOHC), dual overhead cam (DOHC) and even some pushrod V8s. The technology allows camshaft and valve timing to change with engine speed and load so the engine can develop more high-speed power while also getting better fuel economy under light load conditions. but it also creates some challenges for diagnostics and repair.

This course covers the operation of VVT and comprehensive diagnostics for many of the problems you are seeing in your shop. A VVT system is controlled by the ECM electronically, which runs OBD-II Self-Test resulting in us chasing Diagnostic Trouble Codes.

DTCs for Cam and Crank correlation faults as well as the Actual Camshaft position don’t match the Target position.
